Good Start

Good Start offers no-cost training, consultation, and coaching to Washtenaw County early education staff, focusing on promoting  social-emotional development, preventing and addressing challenging behavior, and support inclusive, high-quality environments for children with developmental differences and/ or disabilities. Using culturally relevant, evidence-based strategies, Good Start helps programs improve classroom climate and build capacity to support children's access; participation, and independence.

  •  Training & Education: Educates staff and parents on social-emotional and behavioral development, as well  as developmental differences and disabilities.
  •  Consultation and coaching: Offers individualized consultation and/or coaching around supportive strategies and instructional practices that promote  pro-social behavior and inclusive practices.
  •  Supports programs and building systems of support around: 1) Social-Emotional Development-Encouraging positive behaviors. 2) Behavior Prevention-Reducing ongoing challenges, 3) Intervention-Addressing persistent behavior issues, and 4) Inclusive Practices-Creating high-quality supportive environments for children with developmental differences, delays or disabilities.
  • The Good Start Team includes three highly qualified School Social Workers. They bring deep experience in trauma-informed practice, social-emotional learning and culturally responsive supports to help teams respond to children with understanding, compassion and skill.

How it Works:

Step 1 Request for Services-Complete the Request for Service Form
Step 2 Initial Meeting-Initial meeting to understand current program needs.
Step 3 Observation-Direct observation of classroom/program is conducted.
Step 4 Services Begin- Individualized plan for services is developed and implemented.
